Assignment 1-3 Journal Article

The Article I read is titled Loose Cannons: White Masculinity and the Vulgar Teen Comedy Film.

The article examines movies like Porky's and the American Pie series. The article looks at the

formula of the coming of age films and the changing messages found within them.

The early movies in this genre were more about the boys pushing back against authority than the

vulgarity of the films. Later films like road Trip and the like are more so focus on the sexual aspect and need to subvert authority is there but not omnipresent like the older films.

Weekly Written Analysis 5-1

The camera has always been a part of the human story, every culture around the world has always chosen to document the milestones in their lives on film. Many families would photo album upon photo album filled pictures of happy times.

But over time 35 millimeter film fell out of favor for the ease of use of the digital camera and the small cards that stored the pictures. Another factor in the rise of the digital camera is the rise of the social media. Sites like Facebook, Myspace, Twitter, and any other number of smaller niche forums have allowed.

The digital camera has become so ubiquitous that there are children's versions. The ability to view pictures immediately on the screen of the camera was almost certainly the death nail of 35 millimeter cameras. The introduction of digital cameras into the cell phones almost immediacy changes the way many people communicated. Instead of using words often a picture could say everything that needed to said without saying a word.

Also since their introduction the price of digital cameras has plunged drastically, enabling almost everyone to be able to afford one of the gadgets, and engage in the pastime.

Weekly Analysis 4-1

2011 Mustang
The Mustang is a classic muscle car in sense of the word. I think the Mustang is one of the cars where one will not find much argument about its standing as one of America most loved cars.
Often one speaking of a car one likes there will be many who hate the car for example the Pontiac Aztec, there was and is a certain part of the population who loved the design and others who thought it should have never went into production and should have stayed a concept vehicle.
The reason for the deeply held feeling as easy to identify and are known to all; Americans loves cars, most of us anyway. People are projecting an image with the car they choose to drive, with the colors they choose and the way the customize it or do not customize it.
The first big rite of passage in a person’s life after hitting double digits in age it obtaining a drivers license and the freedom that comes with the keys to mom or dads car, or if one is really lucky your very own car.
2010 Woodward Dream Cruise

This love affair is why every year in Michigan there is The Dream Cruise, a weekend long car show culminating in classic cars like the Mustang cruising up Woodward Avenue late into the night, tires can be heard burning rubber, fifties music blares out of cars, and classic car owners come from around the country to participate. All because we love our cars.

My Favorite

Books are my favorite way to pass the time losing myself in the pages of a well-written book is one of my great luxuries. In the following, I will examine the treatment women’s fiction receives in the publishing world.

There are a few particular and glaring stereotypes being played out in publishing houses and books stores around the world in regards to women’s literature. Which has recently been coined Chick Lit, a term that is it its self, stereotypical. In bookstores, one will not find a section called dude lit. Only fiction and nonfiction, science fiction or humor.

The new genre seems to have emerged due to the belief that men write for everyone and surely, everyone will identify with whatever they write, but women can only write for other women. I believe this is due to women not being taken serious as writers unless there is scholarly work involved.  The meme infuriates me to end. I will however continue to read the writers i love even if I feel a deep need to hide the hideous pink cover.

Weekly Written Analysis

Invented in 1934 Monopoly, the real estate game played around the world has sold 200 million games worldwide. The game is sure to be found in almost every household.

However, over the years, the game has become more than just a game it has become a vehicle for advertising, every version of the game that one could think of has been made; every college has a school version, companies like the beauty company Sephora, and Barbie have branded editions. But, yet the game continues to sell when new versions are released that play upon a niche market.

I love that the company is also reinventing the game, introducing an electronic version sped up the game immensely. I am susceptible to purchasing a new version of the game because of advertising that entices me with whatever new addition has been added to the game. This is why I currently have four Monopoly games.
Monopoly is one of my favorite games, because I always win, I am ruthless I beat my family at this often and cut my family no slack.  I find a rousing game of Monopoly to be a great family activity.

Assignment 2-1

Introduced in 2001 the Apple IPod became an instant must have item and an icon. The I pod was a giant evolutionary step from the also iconic Sony Walkman a portable tape player first introduced in the 1980’s.

What is fascinating about the about the IPod is how quickly the public gravitated towards the new medium. The I Pod allowed for the greatest amount of customization and allowed the owner to be their own D.J.; the freedom to customize speaks to the need of younger generations to express their individuality. The Apple IPod also appealed to early adopters who need to have the latest and greatest products. Apple continues to fulfill their needs by continually introducing newer and more highly functioning Ipods.

When Apple launches a new Ipod it becomes a newsworthy event, and in the beginning, Ipod lovers would upgrade the Ipods with each new generation and technological advance.

Ipods have become ubiquitous in our lives and show no signs of slowing down.
Personally, every member of my family has one and loves it. I think between us every generation but the first and newest one, but surly someone will want the new one as a present and will increase our ever-growing collection.

Icon Analysis

City Seasons Winter Barbie
Barbie was created in 1959, and has since been a representative of the dreams of little girls around the word. Barbie has had many careers, homes, cars, and twice as many outfits.
I chose  Barbie because she allowed little girls to live out their fantasy's, and was the center of my day when I was a child, and for many years in adulthood as I switched from playing with Barbies to collecting them.
pictured are two of the of my favorite barbies that I own.

Evening Sophisticate Barbie

Easy Bake Oven of my youth in the 80's
Another item that I find to be iconic is The easy Bake Oven, for many this was their first foray into cooking.  I chose The Easy Bake Oven because it was one of my favorite items, and every little girl seemed to have one.
Finally, The Muppet's especially Kermit the Frog, Miss Piggy are household names recognizable to everyone. I chose the Muppet's because many grew up seeming them on Sesame Street another another iconic show. My favorite Muppet's  are Slater and Waldorf, the two cranky old men in the balcony who hate everything but their own jokes.

Assignment 1-4

The subject of my analysis this week is the MTV shoe Jersey Shore. Jersey Shore centers are a group of late teen to twenty something is sharing a summer rental at the Jersey Shore, and explores their daily lives.

For some reason that is inexplicable to me the drunkenness, physical violence, verbal abuse shown among the cast members has captured the heart of America and has made the many of the cast members household names.  The Situation, JWoww, Vinny, Pauly-D, Angelina, Ronnie, and Sammie have capitalized on what I hope are their fifteen minutes of fame that they have stretched in sixteen, by promoting various products.

I know they are young and finding themselves, however I just wish they would calm  down just a little.

Artifact

Action Item One

  • What is popular culture, and what does it mean to you?
  • Pop culture is informal versus what is traditionally though of as culture ie. classical music.
  • pop culture to me  is something that popular at the moment with a large group of people. pop culture is also the things that have taken over my everyday life like computers and I pods,  I am absolutely sure i could not function with my Blackberry.
  • Why is an understanding of popular culture relevant to you in a business environment and in your present and future career?
  • Pop Culture is all around us and has infiltrated the business world. A lot of companies use pop culture to their advantage when advertising knowing that the tactic with engage their target audience.
  • What would you consider to be an example of a pop culture artifact? And why would you choose it?
  • I chose the show Glee and specifically the recent Brittney/Brittany  episode. Brittany Spears has been a pop culture icon for some time and the show Glee has reached critical mass with its  popularity as well. I felt this made a perfect choice for an artifact.
